   I ordered this product in Matcha Green as well as a separate listing by the same company for the button replacements (also in Matcha Green) because I didn’t like the buttons included in this listing. If there is a listing for just the joycon shells without buttons, I didn’t see it.Taking apart my joycons was actually pretty easy for me, but it was a bit time-consuming. I’d only recommend this project for folks who don’t mind being very patient and have steady hands for tiny fiddly stuff. So please keep this in mind before ordering, and check out the videos on Youtube that demonstrate the process. I would recommend starting with the right joycon, as it is the most difficult. By the time I got to the left joycon, I was actually having fun and it was a breeze from there. Overall it took a couple of hours to do. Have a small dish handy for the screws and have the video tutorials in front of you. And as other reviewers have mentioned, consider purchasing a separate screwdriver as the tools provided in this kit are not great in quality.As for final results, I’m pleased with how the controllers look. The matte finish is very satisfying. However, it does feel prone to scratches, so I might consider buying a clear plastic protective case in the future. The buttons all work as they should, BUT, the L/R and ZL/ZR buttons feel less springy than the original buttons. I am not sure if this is an issue with the housing, the springs, or the replacement buttons themselves. It does not affect my play but this did bother my partner who is a little more sensitive to that. I do plan on tackling shell replacement on my Pro controller next, but because of the issue with the shoulder buttons, I might hold off on the button replacement for now.

   As for the actual product, all i can say is they are amazing, perfect fit, everything is accurate and they even come with replacement buttons to boot. However i do not like the fact that they are painted, that lets me know that the color and beauty of these is temporary at best. But aside from all that, they look beautiful, and have perfect fit, form, and function.I used these in a full overhaul of the set of joycons that came with my switch. I replaced button ribbons and analog sticks along with the casings. The advertisement says set aside about 3 hours to make it happen. That was very accurate, took me about 2 hours 40 minutes to complete, i would consider myself advanced in electronic repair. This is really NOT for somebody who is not already skilled. Sure its doable with no experience but you’re gonna have a very bad time. Requires a very patient, steady hand since everything is so small. Theres ALOT going on inside of these and the right side joycon is much harder to do than the left. However if you know what youre doing and have the time, these are definitely worth a go. You should have some junk joycons on hand in case one of the ribbon cables or some small part gets ripped or broken. Its very easy and very possible to damage your controllers in the process.

   i loved these new shells, the color is beautiful and the texture is really nice, however i did realize something that is going to mean i have to swap the shells again. i had absolutely no issue with instillation and the quality of the shells, until three weeks ago when i dyed my hair. the shells seem to absorb the oils in myskin, which must have absorbed some color after dying my hair, ultimately the shells became stained in the colors i dyed my hair where my hands cupped the joycons, and ruined the soft yellow color. i tried to use rubbing alcohol and acetone to remove the stains as those will remove hair dye stains from most surfaces but alas it did not work. the buttons didn’t stain, which is odd to me, just the shells, but either way i’ll have to buy new shells and probably some kind of clear hard shell case to create a barrier between my hands and the shells so this doesn’t happen again.

   I love the colors for these. I bought 2 so I could mix and match. One set is for me and the other was for my cousin who also loves her new Joycons. I’ll start by saying I only used the shells that came with this kit and one of the extra screws (love that this kit comes with extra screws and springs they can really get away from you). So, I reused the original Joycon buttons and screws. I also saw other reviews warning about the screwdrivers they provide and how they tend to strip the screws. So, I aired on the side of caution and just bought a Nintendo switch screwdriver kit. Also, I recommend having some tweezers to deal with the ribbon cables. In addition, the video tutorial that eXtremeRate has on YouTube was a bit fast and hard to follow. I ended up following a different tutorial; I recommend ConsoleAccessories tutorial. The first set of Joy Cons took about 3 hours. I just went slow and didn’t try to rush anything and they came out perfect. The 2nd set was a lot easier since I was used to it; took about an hour and 30 minutes. Also, I kinda wish they would sell this kit without the screwdriver set if it’d make it cheaper, especially if some people want to buy more than 1 set.TLDR;Pros:Looks great.Has a matte feel to it.Extra screws and springs just in case.Shells seem to be the perfect fit. I didn’t have any problems sliding in the Joycons.Didn’t have to worry about sanding any of the bits.ZR and ZL buttons don’t feel gummy like some other replacement shells.Cons:The screwdriver provided is difficult to use.Doesn’t come with a pair of tweezers even though they use it in their tutorial video.Their tutorial goes a bit fast can be hard to follow as there’s no vocal instruction or text to follow.UPDATE:I used these with my leg strap to play ring fit andventure and the joycon now has black stain on it that won’t come off. I tried washing it with alcohol wipes and even a chlorox wipe. The black smudge is still there, pretty disappointing. I have another pair of oem joy cons and the leg strap doesn’t stain those.

   Title. If you have a favorite color that isn’t already offered as an offical Joycon colorway, or have any inkling of persuasion to be unique and let your stuff stand out from others, then you’re doing yourself a disservice by not getting a custom shell.eXtremeRate offers a fantastic selection of aesthetically pleasing colors that, for the most part, all go together quite nicely, so it’s hard to go wrong if you want to mix and match. I had a hard time deciding between various combinations of white, heaven blue, sakura pink, and light violet. The only suggestion for improvement I have in terms of the selection here is that I wish you could buy the halves separately, as duo-tone Joycons are kind of the precedent set by Nintendo.Quality is top-notch. While the shell and buttons do have a different texture than OEM, they feel every bit as sturdy and are virtually identical to official Joycons. The internals fit perfectly and lined up with every notch and screw hole during the shell swapping operation. The aforementioned different texture on these is just slightly more rubbery/silicone-y, but not at all like the sticky or friction-y kind that picks up all the lint as soon as it touches your pocket lining; I consider it an improvement over the original.While this has nothing to do with the product itself, assembly is pretty dang hard. I wish it were as simple as just unscrewing the plastic case and putting on a new one, but you have to disassemble pretty much the whole controller and migrate multiple layers of parts into the new shells. It’s not exaggerating at all when people say expect it to take 3-5 hours for your first try! Fortunately the kit includes the two kinds of screwdriver needed, though it goes by easier if you have your own higher-quality tools.I wouldn’t say there is much risk of damaging your Joycons as long as you’re careful, have the right tools, and follow a tutorial. Some skills you will need that I would have prepared my past self for: unscrewing some of the outside screws without stripping them (fortunately the kit includes replacement screws that are Philips head instead of tri-wing); pulling out and re-plugging in ribbon cables (you’ll absolutely need steady hands and some tweezers or needle-nose pliers), and possibly having to click certain pieces into place like LEGO.Those hours of work paid off, and I’m in love with how they turned out! Definitely way more attached to my Switch now that it has a custom shell and Joycons. I’m honestly tempted to buy an extra set of Joycons or two just to do more custom colorways and mix them around; we’ll see. In the meantime, I absolutely recommend getting some for yourself. Shell swapping made out to be a fantastic DIY project that’s ultra rewarding and satisfying in the end and really helps make your Switch feel like your own.

   So happy I bought this to give my switch a refreshed custom look for a low price tag. I previously used switch skin but couldn’t stand seeing the original colors around the edges of the buttons. It wasn’t difficult to swap out the old shell (the ZR/ZL buttons are a bit tedious, but just take your time. There are plenty of YouTube videos to help you through the process.) The light blue color I chose looks better in person than the picture. I opted to keep the original black buttons but add some thumb grips to add a little pizzazz. Super happy with how it turned out!

   As another reviewer said – if you can put together ikea furniture, you’re capable of doing this. HOWEVER, being capable of something doesn’t mean it’s the right project for you. It requires a LOT of patience and a steady hand, but it’s so worth it. I watched the MrMario tutorial as I was doing it and paused as needed – he explained everything really well. I also purchased the ifixit tool kit to use but did wind up using the replacement screws that came with the shells. On one of my joycons, one of the Y screws was already stripped when I started and I had to break the original shell off in order to open it. That took about 45min alone and I spent about 3 hours doing both joycons total – so I’d say just over an hour per joycon not including the screw debacle. The product itself is great quality and I love the matcha green color!

    I broke my limited edition Pokemon shell while trying to fix the drift issue… But I found this replacement and thought I’d rather have a cloud-like blue gradient so I made the purchase.I appreciated they included extra screws and springs, although I didn’t lose any just the thought that I had spares was a relief. I would like it if they would include Y screws though, I had dropped two of mine and thought it would be easier to just take from the kit but found there were none… so I HAD to go looking for these tiny little screws.Second thought, the video tutorial showed replacing the SL and SR button, yet it wasn’t included in the kit. While it doesn’t show, I just can’t stop thinking about the mismatched colors. Haha. I also opted to use my original black buttons, not too keen on the colored buttons they had included.Next thought, while watching the video I noticed the SL and SR button took a bit of pressure to come off, I thought I was going to break it and when I did get it off I noticed I had bent some areas a tad out of shape. So when I was working on the 2nd controller, I found that if you apply pressure from the back it sort of pops off on it’s own. Just a tip if you are nervous about everything and an amateur like I am.Finally, kit comes with the absolute minimum required to change. It came with the two changeable screwdriver head. I would recommend getting a spudger and tweezer if this is your first time taking apart electronics. It made things a lot easier.

    I love this color! The material is fantastic, these shells feel great if not better than the Nintendo ones.I did not like having the same blue and red joycon colors as everyone else, or that my joycons were not the same color. This is a great way to customize your console.The only hurdle and drawback to these custom shells is the hurdle of installing them. I have an iFixit toolkit and 3-4 phones repair experience but this was the most challenging to work on out of all that I’ve done because of all the small parts and tight spaces. The provided video by the seller is just someone doing the repair but really sped up, no commentary but rather abnoxious music lol. There are MANY comments I saw on that video of people saying they stripped their joycon screws using the provided screwdrivers. The triwing screws Nintendo uses are so easily strippable I highly recommend purchasing a good triwing screwdriver, I used the Y00 bit in my iFixit kit. Also, when I was almost done with the right joycon my “Y” and “B” buttons were very hard to press and had a very loud click. I had to open it back up and move the squishy rubber behind the buttons into place so if the buttons feel weird just check on that :)Repair took me around 3 hours, there were some moments where my joycon was so toredown that I wondered if I’d even be able to put it back together but it was a very rewarding experience because of that.Also, I didn’t understand why there were a full set of replacement buttons. The Nintendo ones have noticably better quality than the provided ones so I used those, but the inside bumpers sr/sl are colored blue and red so I switched those out and recommend you do the same.If you think replacement shells are for you, definitely buy them from eExtremerate, good luck!

    I’m not sure about the lifespan of these shells, but I hope to come and update this review in the future. For now, I wanna say that the shells make my switch look super cute. I love the look and feel of them. Replacing the joy con shells was not easy for me, but I don’t have a lot of experience taking electronics apart and reassembling them. I did get them replaced and they do function as they are supposed to, so I’d call this project a success! These shells come with replacement buttons as well. I bought my own additional buttons from the seller as well. I would not recommend using the tools that come with this kit. Buy a better tool set and make sure you get one with tweezers. I tried to use the included tool when replacing my back shell and stripped a screw. Luckily that particular screw didn’t need to be removed to replace that shell. If you have fat and clumsy fingers like me, maybe try finding someone who is more experienced doing projects such as this! You can definitely do it yourself, but it puts your joy-cons at risk and it will take a while if you don’t already know what you’re doing. Overall satisfied with my purchase.

    Full disclaimer, this took me nearly 8 hours including two store runs, a meal break, button painting & drying time, and a rage break. I’ve never worked on small electronics before, though I do consider myself good at small, fiddly, fine-work crafts. I watched JerryRigEverything to take my step-by-step.The HARDEST part about this entire process was the external screws. They are the special tri-tip, and they are extremely soft and strip IMMEDIATELY. on my first joycon one of them stripped and I had to really work it out, while on my second ‘con THREE of the stupid things stripped and I had to basically destroy the original shell to aggressively get them out with pliers. I’m curious if a better screwdriver would help, since it seemed to get worse and worse with every screw. So, to save you from the near-stroke-inducing anger I experienced, maybe go ahead and order yourself a higher quality tri-tip preventatively.Once the controller is open it really isn’t that bad, just take it slow and be gentle. I’m mad I spent almost half of this project time just trying to get into the joycons.Anyway, I’m extremely hard headed and I made it happen. Everything works great. I love the soft-plastic feel of this case. I ordered the colored buttons from their other listing, though I had to paint my own screenshot, +, -, and home button which seems super dumb.

    I want to start this review by saying I do not tamper with electronics and knew this was going to be an intimidating project. However, I have wanted to customize my joycons for a long time, so I took the plunge! This is a really good kit, definitely worth the higher price than some other shells. It comes with a little screwdriver, the shells with the internal plastic battery holder thing, (sorry idk what it’s called) all of the triggers, buttons, and screws you need. That means that if you’re careful, you will have extra buttons and screws. This project didn’t take me hours. After reading the other reviews, I was anticipating a long assembly time. All together, this might have taken me an hour and a half. I used a youtube video instead of the website video that the instructions tell you to use. It wouldn’t have taken me that long if I wouldn’t have accidentally detached the ribbon cable from the motherboard when putting the right joycon’s charge stick back on. If you do accidentally detach the ribbon cables, you will want to use curved tweezers to align and lock them back into place. Overall, I think this kit made the replacement of these joycon shells as easy as it could be. The only things I wish it had that it did not were magnetized screwdriver heads and tweezers with it (I had to use my own). I love the look and feel of these shells. They are soft and don’t feel cheap. Now I’m thinking I want to buy a few more to re-shell a few more pairs I own.

    I absolutely love my new joycon shells and buttons! I got mine in the Matcha Green color and it is so stunning, I can’t stop looking at it. The shells and buttons fit perfectly and I had no issues with the products during installation. I love that it came with extra screws since the Y shaped screws that close the joycons aren’t great quality; I replaced them with the included black screws which are phillips screws and they were much better quality than the original ones.In terms of installation, I found it super easy and actually really fun to do. Word to the wise, you do not have to take out every screw and undo every ribbon cable; that just over complicates it and makes it take about 3x as long. I recommend watching the video by Console Accessories on Youtube. He explains it wonderfully and only disassembles the parts that are necessary. I did mine in about an hour and had no issues, and that’s coming from someone that’s never done anything like this before. If you’re on the fence about doing this, I recommend checking out his video beforehand since it’s less nerve wracking.All in all, I highly recommend these shells and the matching buttons. It looks so unique and the pictures really don’t do it justice.Tip: If you really want to take your new joycon shells to the next level, use the Joycon Toolkit program to change the color in your joycons’ software (as i’ve done, see pictures). That way they will show up as the correct color when connected to your switch! It’s super easy to use and made my joycon makeover more polished.

    i’m sorry for the somewhat aggressive title for this review, but it’s important that you know that these are shell replacements, not joycon cases. so going into this, i knew that the installation process was going to be a bit tedious and after the fact i can confirm that it was definitely tedious! i watched an 18ish minute youtube tutorial to help me install these which helped me out. the installation though took an hour for me. aside from the installation, these are great shell replacements! the texture on them are nice, the color is nice and consistent, the seams between the top and bottom cases are nearly seamless, and the joycons work normally. the kit also came with a screwdriver with two different heads and replacement screws that came in handy! overall, great product and installing the new shells was definitely rewarding!

    This is a very high quality product. Absolutely love it. I unfortunately had to give it 2; 1 stars on the ease of assembly and ease of installation. These Switch Joycons are definitely not something you’d want to constantly take apart and put back together. I’m very skilled at stuff like this. But these Joycons are totally something else. You definitely need to have a calm demeanor, and patience. Took me over 6 hours to do just 1 of them. I honestly do recommend this product for those of you who want to change the look of your Joycons, because the reward in the end is worth the time and energy that’s put into it. I absolutely love how it came out in the end. I did use the original center (the red and blue trigger spacer) because heads up if your not careful you’ll end up having to buy replacement parts. But in the end it’s a 5 star product.

    Warning: this may be difficult if you aren’t used to taking apart electronics.This was my 3rd time replacing the joycon shells/plates. The first time I made my switch look like an Old SNS but I was completely new at all it and messed up my Switch joycon because I didn’t connect a tiny plate. Second time was me taking it apart to fix it and third time was this one I’m about to review. I state all of this to tell you that if you aren’t willing to put in work it will be a pain in your ruckus.Apart from other experience this was super easy to replace. The only problem I have is that my home button needs to be smashed hard to use it but that is probably just something I caused myself since the right joycon is EXTRA hard to put back because the internal hardware is more complex because the right joycon is the one you can use to scan amiibos.Super happy with my new switch joycons! They are sturdy and adorable. I was distraught I could not buy the Animal Crossing Switch Special Edition so I bought these shells and the backplate. It’s gorgeous! I have no complaints at all 🙂

    I love these shells! My first purchase was their dark green and their caution yellow. I wasn’t impressed with the color of the yellow, as it’s more of a Mac and cheese orange. But the green is great. I’ve used that set consistently for 7 months and it’s still in excellent condition. I decided to get another pair in light violet; again, I’m in love. My only gripe with the purple is that the battery tray, which shows in between the trigger and bumper buttons, is black instead of purple. The green set had all three pieces as green, so when put together, there’s the distinction between the buttons. I like the look both ways, but it just wasn’t what I had expected. Overall, excellent product. Great color, great durability and really easy to set up. The kit comes with all the tools and replacement parts. There’s a YT tutorial that walks you through the setup if this is your first time.

    I didn’t have trouble installing these and the joycons work perfectly and have no technical issues. Although it was time consuming and a bit of a challenge, it was a fun project. Having a full set of tools was extremely helpful and in my opinion, necessary. When I first installed them, they looked great but after a few weeks they have started to become discolored. The first picture is from when I first installed them and the other 2 are what they looked like after a couple weeks and the pictures don’t show the full extent of it. My only theory as to why they are turning that color in particular is that it’s the color of my hair dye at the moment. However, the color from my hair dye hasn’t transferred to anything else (even my pillowcases, etc) so I think the paint on these things simply becomes discolored very easily. I don’t like how it looks now and I think it’s just going to get worse so I might buy another set of shells from another brand and swap them again.
